CAD/CAM Integrated Manufacturing with Unigraphics

Solids, Faces, Surfaces and/or edges can be used

Let's look at the seven steps for an N/C programming sequence using Unigraphics.
  • Create Manufacturing Assembly
  • Establish MFG Environment
  • 3)Create Group Parents
  • 4)Create Operation(s)
  • 5)Verify
  • 6)Shop Documentation
  • 7)Postprocess
There are several ways to machine geometry in a 3 axis mill mode.
We will look at several methods using Unigraphics that will allow you to machine planar as well as contoured geometry.
The system by default will place you into the "Base" module upon logging into Unigrpahics.
You will select <pulldown> Application -> Manufacturing.

What are Parent Groups? They are the settings you reference or create prior to creating an NC Operation/Toolpath.

    Four Parent Groups
  • Tool
  • Geometry
  • Machine
  • Operation

It is a benefit to have a solid model when generating tool paths.Select HERE to view document referencing planar milling on a solid model with the blank stock representing rough billet. This operation uses the Mill Contour method and the sub-type of Z-Level Cavity Mill. This quickly cuts all pockets and islands.

Using Planar Milling Operations the Boundary Type can be open or closed. You will reference the solidmodel and/or combination of various geomtery types to create toolpaths. You can also reference the solids, surfaces/sheets or curves that were imported from other CAD systems. Select HERE to reference document about toolpath creation referencing open boundaries for a profile pass on canted plane.

Select HERE to view a document with selection picks for editing an Open Boundary. This exercise is appended to the above example. This enables you to add custom settings such as +/- side stock or modifying feed rates for individual boundary entities.

You will reference a tool or create one when prompted for tool data.

Select HERE to download or open document referencing planar mill with wireframe boundary. The wireframe can be any geometry imported into Unigraphics from other CAD systems. It is not necessary to create a solid model as this geometry can be quickly referenced to generate toolpaths. This document covers the menu options and dialog selection steps to create V18 Unigraphics tool paths when referencing wireframe geometry.
